Nicola Cappellini
I was born in Italy but was raised for many years in the United States. I started with music at the age of ten. At first I didn’t care about anything except playing percussion and drums. Then at thirteen I discovered I also had a passion for the guitar.
My teacher was active in the salsa and Latin-Jazz scene. Little by little I became more active with the ensemble in the clubs. At school I played percussion in the orchestra, after-school in the marching band.
In college I won a scholarship to study classical guitar at the conservatory in Ithaca, New York under Pablo Cohen. After graduation I went to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to study music, folklore and regional styles. In particular a style called chorinho. I was honored to be included in musical projects and cultural initiatives as an accompanist. I even worked as a sound engineer in a live music venue.
Back in Italy, I enrolled at the Paganini Conservatory in Genova for a Biennio di II livello (master-level). An Erasmus+ pedagogical internship led to a six-year teaching role at the K.U. Leuven university in Belgium.
Apart from my interest in teaching, in Belgium I was also active as a performer. My main artistic interest is the intersection of music, history and culture in the service of people.
